O'Neil auditioned for the third season of Canadian Idol in the early months of 2005 while still in high school. She made it to the top 100 rounds following the judges' praise for her singing ability. O'Neil received praise of high quality from her judges. She suffered significant losses in the top 10 as well as the Top 9 weeks of the finals, when she was put into the bottom three and second-bottom two places as well as the bottom two. Judges were shocked by the results and advised the audience to choose contestants similar to Melissa, who had the best singing abilities. O'Neil did not make it to the third place again following an impressive string of performance. Her performance on the 7th September in 2005 was such a dazzling performance that judge Werner predicted the news headlines. O'Neil beat Rex Goudie and became the third Canadian Idol. O'Neil immediately received a call from Canadian the prime minister Paul Martin to congratulate her for winning Canadian Idol.
